STEM Activities

L.E.D. Firefly Sewing Project

This activity teaches participants the basics of sewing and electrical engineering. Using conductive thread and felt, participants will cut out the shape of a firefly and sew an L.E.D. light into the bottom of the firefly. By properly connecting the thread to a battery, participants will have designed an electrical circuit.

Rain Cloud in a Jar Project

This activity teaches participants the basics of the water cycle and how to visualize object density. Using shaving cream, water, and a mason jar, participants create a rain cloud simulation.

Homemade Lipgloss Project

This activity teaches participants the basics of chemical engineering. Using food-grade items, participants will be able to design the consistency, color, and shine of their lipgloss. Through discussion over chemical bonds, participants are able to take home a fun activity that demonstrates the fundamentals of chemistry and chemical design.

Geodesic Dome Project

This activity teaches participants the basics of shape strength and civil engineering. Using jelly beans and toothpicks, participants think through a mechanical blueprint to build their dome.

Mechanical Grabber Arm Project

This activity teaches participants the basics of mechanical engineering through joints. Using recycled materials and straws, participants create a multi-jointed “grabber” arm that can pick up objects.
