In case you weren’t already aware, the outreach event we had tentatively planned for June 25 has been moved to July 30, 2016 from 10 am to 2 pm. We’ll work on giving you updates about this event, but if you haven’t already, please email us and let us know if you’ll be available to help.
We have another great outreach opportunity on Saturday, July 16 – Moon Day at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas. For this one we’re partnering with Dallas SWE to help them with the booth they’re going to set up. Please email Dallas SWE to let them know you’ll be joining us for that event.
Each year, the University of Texas at Dallas’ Science and Engineering Education Center hosts a week-long residential camp for high school girls. The camp is funded in part by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with the express intent of introducing the girls to the wonderful world of engineering. In fact, girls attending this camp are 11x more likely to express a strong interest in engineering when compared to girls attending general STEM camps. To date, over 600 young women have been served through this unique camp program.
UT Dallas works with and through community partners to promote this camp opportunity to young ladies in our community. This year, we have partnered with both Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership Academy. We are expecting 125 bright and inquiring minds to join us on campus the week of July 17th.
During the week, the participants will be tackling one of the Grand Engineering Challenges of our time- access to clean drinking water. Utilizing the engineering design process and user-centric design, the girls will be tasked with designing a product that helps increase access to clean drinking water for a particular individual. At the end of the camp session, teams will present their engineering solutions to a panel of “experts” who will give them feedback on their final design. This is where you come in!
Please join us in our miniature version of “Shark Tank” to hear the girls’ innovative designs and provide them encouraging feedback. No training is required or advance preparation is required.
