July Calendar Update – Three Outreach Opportunities!

We look forward to seeing everyone at these great outreach opportunities. They are so much fun and the attendees are so grateful to see role models of women in STEM that they can look up to.

UTA       images

In case you weren’t already aware, the outreach event we had tentatively planned for June 25 has been moved to July 30, 2016 from 10 am to 2 pm.  We’ll work on giving you updates about this event, but if you haven’t already, please email us and let us know if you’ll be available to help.

We have another great outreach opportunity on Saturday, July 16 – Moon Day at the Frontiers of Flight Museum in Dallas. For this one we’re partnering with Dallas SWE to help them with the booth they’re going to set up. Please email Dallas SWE to let them know you’ll be joining us for that event.

Each year, the University of Texas at Dallas’ Science and Engineering Education Center hosts a week-long residential camp for high school girls. The camp is funded in part by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with the express intent of introducing the girls to the wonderful world of engineering. In fact, girls attending this camp are 11x more likely to express a strong interest in engineering when compared to girls attending general STEM camps. To date, over 600 young women have been served through this unique camp program.

UT Dallas works with and through community partners to promote this camp opportunity to young ladies in our community. This year, we have partnered with both Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas and the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership Academy. We are expecting 125 bright and inquiring minds to join us on campus the week of July 17th.

During the week, the participants will be tackling one of the Grand Engineering Challenges of our time- access to clean drinking water. Utilizing the engineering design process and user-centric design, the girls will be tasked with designing a product that helps increase access to clean drinking water for a particular individual.  At the end of the camp session, teams will present their engineering solutions to a panel of “experts” who will give them feedback on their final design. This is where you come in!

Please join us in our miniature version of “Shark Tank” to hear the girls’ innovative designs and provide them encouraging feedback. No training is required or advance preparation is required.

When: Friday, July 22 from 11:00-noon (feel free to join us for lunch afterwards)
Where: The campus of UT Dallas, 800 W. Campbell Rd, Richardson TX
Why: To encourage and inspire the next generation of female engineers!
For more information or to sign up, contact Lynn Mortensen at labmort@sbcglobal.net or714-872-7910.

Professional Development – Emotional Intelligence with Jane Loya Ryan

Fort Worth SWE is excited to bring you an intriguing new professional development opportunity on Saturday, April 30th.  Light breakfast fare will be provided, so RSVPs are a must.

Please RSVP to Jody Snow at jsnow0@charter.net by COB Thursday, April 28th.
What is Emotional Intelligence and Why Should I Care?

These days our career performance depends on our ability to work with and understand those around us. Maintaining a high level of emotional intelligence (EQ) provides an invaluable skill set to motivate and collaborate effectively with colleagues and clients. Some experts contend that high EQ can be more important than high IQ in predicting career success. So how can you be more EQ-savvy?

Join the Fort Worth SWE on April 30th to learn more about Emotional Intelligence from speaker Jane Loya Ryan of Jane Ryan & Associates LLC. She will share her expertise as a management consultant and psychologist to explain how to improve our emotional intelligence to enhance our leadership and career skills.

Jane is the Founder and President of Jane Ryan & Associates LLC, a Dallas, Texas based organizational and leadership development transformational coaching firm. She is an expert in transformational learning, leadership development and career transitions with a specialization in helping her clients strengthen their emotional intelligence, interpersonal, critical and creative thinking skills. She applies her extensive studies in neuroleadership coaching to her client’s transformation goals. Her strong leadership development, career transition and executive coaching provides her client’s measurable and achievable outcomes resulting in improved performance, growth and a renewed energy and outlook on life and their careers. Jane uses applied science methodology incorporating proven techniques to help her clients move from where they are today to where they need to be.

Senior Send-Off 2016

In keeping with tradition, the Fort Worth Professional SWE section hosted a Senior Sendoff lunch at UTA this Sunday. The weather was gloomy, but we had a good turnout and got a lot of good advice from FW SWE President Jody Snow about dressing for success (and what not to wear) in professional settings. We love sharing our personal experiences (good and bad) with young ladies who are entering the professional work force.

Here are our seniors! From left to right: Bria Miles (UNT), Jalyn Nickerson (UNT), Grace Duncan (TCU), Caroline Patel (TCU), and Michelle Parten (TCU)

Congratulations to our seniors and best wishes for your future! We hope to see you in our FW SWE meetings, at conferences and outreach events, and maybe even in the office!  🙂
